AIR PURIFIER GUIDE

What is right for your organisation?

WHAT KINDS OF CONTAMINANTS ARE IN THE AIR?

Indoors, we’re exposed to hundreds of different contaminants in three categories:

Particulate matter A mixture of solid and liquid particles, which includes dust, dirt, soot, smoke, and drops of liquid. The source of particulate matter can include manufacturing or construction activity, vehicle exhausts and other mechanical activity.

Most hazardous are particles smaller than 10 microns.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) VOCs (volatile organic compounds), are a group of gaseous contaminants emitted from solids and liquids. General sources of VOCs are a wide range of regularly used products such as; paints, cleaning detergents, building materials, cosmetic products and pesticides. As well as food odours, sewer odours and many other noxious odours.

Microbiological contamination These are mainly bacteria, viruses, spores and moulds. Sources are numerous; humans, heating and air conditioning systems, waste containers, pets, kitchens, and hazardous microbes in medical environments.

NOT ALL AIR PURIFIERS DO THE SAME JOB. SO, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TECHNOLOGIES?

UVC & UVA Filtration & Sanitisation (Photocatalytic Oxidisation - PCO)

Removes: completely destroys micro-organisms, viruses, bacteria, mould and VOCs. Helps to disinfect the air to prevent spread of illness.

Does Not Remove: allergens such as dust, or larger solid airborne particulates so it is not ideal on its own and should be used in combination with HEPA & activated carbon filters.

HEPA Filters (High Efficiency Particulate Absorbing Filter)

Removes: particles such as bacteria, viruses, dust mites & their waste, mould spores, pollen, dust, and visible smoke particles. HEPA filters capture these particles but do not destroy the particles – only capture in the filter. Filters require changing periodically.

Does Not Remove: Vapours or gases such as chemical fumes, odours, organic & animal odours, noxious gases, vapour based volatile organic compounds (VOC’s).

Activated Carbon Filters

Removes: Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), chemical fumes, gases, smoke odours, VOCs from regularly used products such as; paints, cleaning detergents, building materials, cosmetic products and pesticides. As well as food odours, sewer odours and many other noxious odours.

Activated Carbon does not remove much more than the above gaseous elements and odours so it should be used in combination with other filter technologies such as True HEPA.

Does Not Remove: bacteria, viruses, pollens, mould spores, dust mite, dust.

WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER WHEN BUYING AN AIR PURIFIER?

Size: Area size and how many areas in my organisation: This matters, air purifiers are often rated to a cleaning capacity per metre square/per hour. However, you also need to take into consideration high ceilings which would increase the total area in cubic metres.

Environmental circumstances: how many people typically use the space? Is it a high traffic area i.e. general public or staff? What is the environment i.e. medical, food, office, education, sporting facility? Do I need to consider the noise level of an Air Purifier?

Organisation’s goals: what is the purpose or work safety plan of my organisation? i.e. targeting some, one or all of the following; viruses, odours, mould, dust. Remember, not all Air purifiers do the same job.

Budget: am I a small business, government or large corporation, what budget constraints do I have or do I need to adhere to procurement processes?
